Warning signs

Six signs your system needs flushing

Any two of these and it's time. Left alone, sludge damages the pump and boiler — a £300 flush now saves a £2,500 boiler later.

Cold spots at the bottom

Radiator is hot at the top, cold at the bottom — classic sludge symptom.

Some rads don't heat up

Water can't flow through the sludge — the furthest radiators go cold first.

Banging or kettling noises

Sludge insulates the heat exchanger and causes boiling pockets that knock and bang.

Dirty water when bleeding

Black or brown water instead of clear is a dead giveaway of iron oxide contamination.

Slow to warm up

System takes an age to reach temperature — flow is being throttled by deposits.

Boiler keeps cutting out

The pump overheats trying to push water through clogged pipework.

The benefits

Why a power flush is one of the best-value jobs you can do

Cheaper than a new boiler, quicker than a repair, and the difference is felt the very next morning.

Hot radiators, top to bottom

Cold spots vanish. Every radiator reaches full temperature evenly, so every room feels the way it should.

Lower gas bills

A clean system heats up faster and holds heat longer. Typical saving 8–10% on gas versus a sludged system.

Quieter boiler

Banging, kettling and gurgling noises are almost always caused by sludge. A flush usually silences them completely.

Longer boiler life

Sludge is the number-one killer of heat exchangers and pumps. Removing it can add 5+ years to your boiler's life.

Warranty protection

Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi all require a clean, inhibited system to honour their warranties. A flush keeps you covered.

Faster warm-up

Sludge slows water flow. Once it's gone, your morning heating comes on in minutes instead of half an hour.

On the job

See what a power flush actually looks like

A real demonstration of what's entailed in a power flush — watch a MagnaCleanse system in action as it clears sludge and restores full flow to the heating system.

Our process

Six steps, one clean system

01
System check & isolation

We inspect the boiler, pump and radiators, protect the floors, and isolate the system safely.

02
Connect the power flush pump

The pump connects to the pipework or across the boiler — high-flow, low-pressure so nothing is stressed.

03
MagnaCleanse & chemical clean

Powerful magnets catch iron oxide sludge while Sentinel X400 cleaner breaks down deposits inside every radiator.

04
Individual radiator flush

Each radiator is agitated and reverse-flushed in turn until the water runs clear.

05
Refill, inhibit & test

System refilled with fresh water, dosed with Sentinel X100 inhibitor, re-pressurised and fully tested.

06
Before & after report

We show you the TDS reading (dissolved solids in the water) before and after — proof the job is done.

The problem

What is sludge — and why does it wreck heating systems?

Central heating systems are steel radiators and copper pipe filled with water. Over time, oxygen reacts with the steel to form iron oxide — a thick, black, magnetic sludge. It sinks to the bottom of radiators (that's why the bottom feels cold while the top is hot) and thickens into a paste that blocks pipes, jams pumps and cakes the boiler's heat exchanger.

A power flush is the only way to clear it properly. High-flow water, magnetic filtration and cleaning chemicals are pushed through every radiator in turn until the return water runs clear — restoring the system to like-new performance.

Our kit

Professional-grade equipment, industry-standard chemicals

We use commercial power flush pumps rated for domestic systems, MagnaCleanse magnetic filtration to catch iron oxide as it lifts, and Sentinel-branded cleaners and inhibitors — the same range Worcester, Vaillant and Baxi recommend to keep their boiler warranties valid.

  • Kamco / Fernox power flush pumps
  • Twin MagnaCleanse magnetic filters
  • Sentinel X400 rapid cleaner
  • Sentinel X100 corrosion inhibitor
  • TDS meter for before / after readings

Our promise

Fixed pricing, real proof, no surprises.

Some firms quote low and then pile on extras when the job is halfway done — dud radiator valves, unexpected chemicals, "extended time" charges. Not us. We agree the fixed price before we start and stick to it. If we spot a problem during the flush that genuinely needs your call, we pause and talk it through before doing anything else.

Every flush finishes with a before-and-after water quality reading and a printed report for your warranty file. Dales Boiler Services has been flushing systems across Brighton and Hove since 1998 — we know what a proper job looks like.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does a power flush cost?

Our full-system power flush starts from £300, including all chemicals, a MagnaClean magnetic filter check and a system inhibitor top-up. Larger homes (8+ radiators) or particularly sludged systems are quoted individually — we'll always give you a fixed price before we start.

How long does a power flush take?

A typical 3-bed home with 6–8 radiators takes 4–6 hours. Bigger systems or heavily sludged ones can stretch to a full day. We work off dust sheets, protect your floors and clean up before we leave.

How do I know if my system needs one?

Common signs are cold spots at the bottom of radiators, some radiators not heating up, banging or knocking noises from the boiler, slow warm-up times, or dirty black water when you bleed a rad. If you're seeing any of these — book a call and we'll take a look.

Will a power flush fix my boiler?

It fixes the cause of many boiler problems — sludge blocking the heat exchanger, pump failures and noisy operation. If your boiler itself has failed, a flush alone won't revive it, but it protects the new one you fit and is often required by manufacturers to keep the warranty valid.

Do you use MagnaCleanse and inhibitor?

Yes. We use industry-standard MagnaCleanse magnetic filtration alongside the pump, Sentinel X400 cleaner and X100 inhibitor. Everything is British-made and covered by the manufacturers' guarantees.

Is it messy?

No. All the dirty water stays inside our sealed pump and hoses — nothing spills onto your floor. We use protective sheeting throughout and leave the house exactly as we found it.
